13th edition of the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) Collaboration Mission

November 9, 2020 –  Each year, in the context of the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP), select institutional representatives from the Americas and the Caribbean are invited to participate in a Collaboration Mission to Canada. The goal is to encourage and facilitate partnerships between the mission participants and Canadian post-secondary institutions, leading to increased bilateral student mobility and joint research projects.

This year, due to COVID-19, the 13th edition of the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) Collaboration Mission takes place virtually. From October 27 to November 17, 2020, 28 senior officials from 15 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean take part in virtual networking events and educational activities.  Canadian post-secondary institutions and educational association, such as Northern Lights College, Cegep de la Gaspésie et des Îles, College of North Atlantic, Sault College, Medicine Hat College and CICan will be presenting in the context of educational activities.

The theme of this year’s event evolves around green economy, including but not limited to, climate-smart agriculture, coastal and fisheries management, renewable energy, sustainable building techniques, and agro-forestry.

The 2020 Collaboration Mission aims to create more opportunities for student and faculty mobility by building on the achievements of previous missions. This year’s delegates are from 15 different countries: Argentina, Bahamas, Belize, Bolivia,  Brazil, Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Turks and Caicos Islands.

The delegation will also virtually attend the Canadian Bureau for International Education’s (CBIE) 54rd Annual Conference. CBIE is a national bilingual not-for-profit organization that administers many of Global Affairs Canada’s International Scholarships Programs (ISP). CBIE also organizes the annual ELAP Collaboration Mission.

About the Collaboration Mission

The Collaboration Mission is a key feature of the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program, one of Global Affairs Canada’s Student Exchange Programs (SEP), that offers over 450 scholarships per year for short-term study and research exchanges at Canadian colleges and universities. In the past five years, over 3,000 college, undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty members and professional staff, from post-secondary institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean, have benefited from SEP scholarships.
