Zhejiang University (Visiting professor in Mechatronic Engineering)

The Canada-China Scholars’ Exchange Program allowed me to visit Zhejiang University in Hangzhou for ten months. As a visiting Canadian professor, I carried out research in the field of biomechanics and rehabilitation, which is relatively new in China. Several research projects were conducted on topics such as the biomechanics and benefits of bamboo pole-based weight carrying, and wearable sensors for human movement monitoring. By sharing my experiences and by teaching research methods to students, I contributed to establishing research capacity in this area at Zhejiang University.

Throughout the visit, I worked with professors in China which strengthened our collaboration. I also continue to be directly involved in co-supervising eight Chinese students (three at the PhD level, two at the Masters’ level and three at the undergraduate level) on their thesis work. Overall, the research is fruitful and as a result, several international journal publications are currently being prepared.

Thanks to the Canada-China Scholars’ Exchange Program, a long-term international collaboration has been established and will benefit both the Canadian and Chinese universities.
