AI and agriculture technology: a growing field of study
education • March 8, 2024
Did you know that Canada is home to over 150 million acres of farmland? Canada is a global leader in agricultural innovation and technological development. A Canadian education can prepare you for a promising career in this growing field.
Without a doubt, farming is evolving and becoming more technologically advanced. This growth means a demand for people with the skills and knowledge to work in Canada’s progressive agricultural and food sectors. “This is one sector that is not going away,” says Raveneet Singh, Subject Matter Expert at Olds College. “Let’s just take our food and where it comes from very seriously and make a career out of that.” Smart farming and agriculture go beyond food and crops. There are many areas to take your career, including:
- technologies in robotics, drones and automated machinery
- livestock health and wellbeing
- soil composition and fertilizer management
- precision agriculture
- the use of smart irrigation
- livestock farming technology
- artificial intelligence
- environmental health and sustainability
- data analytics
Imagine being able to manage crops and fields using a (very advanced) remote control!
You might be wondering: what if I’ve never worked on a farm? According to Simon Knutson, Teacher and Developer at Olds College, many potential students believe they need an agricultural background to enter this field. Not the case, says Simon. “Before I came to Canada, I’d never really been on a farm. I’m proof sitting here that you don’t need it.” With or without experience, there are plenty of opportunities to learn and explore this dynamic industry.
There’s no question, the future of farming is driven by AI and technology. These technologies not only help Canada’s agricultural sector grow and remain competitive but can prepare you for emerging career paths. By studying in Canada, you gain the high-tech skills needed on farms now and in the future!
