What you need before you apply for a study permit
Before you start your study permit application, take time to gather the required documents and confirm key details. Completing the steps below will help you prepare a complete application.
1. Get a letter of acceptance
Choose from one of Canada’s world-class schools and apply to study there. Once you are accepted, you’ll receive an official letter of acceptance.
Double-check that your school is on Canada’s list of designated learning institutions before accepting your offer.
2. Check if you need a PAL/TAL
Most students must include a provincial or territorial attestation letter (PAL/TAL) with their application. If you plan to study in Quebec, you need a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (Certificat d’acceptation du Québec [CAQ]).
Contact your school to find out how to apply for a PAL/TAL. In most cases, you need to accept your offer and pay tuition fees before receiving your PAL/TAL.
3. Prepare proof of identity
You must provide proof of identity for yourself and each family member coming with you. Proof of identity includes the information page of your valid passport or travel document and two recent passport-sized photos.
4. Prepare proof of funds
You must show that you have enough money, without working in Canada, to support yourself and any family members coming with you. This includes tuition, housing, food, transportation, and other living costs.
Review the current financial requirements from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and ensure your documents are recent and consistent with the details in your application.
Review the cost of living and studying in Canada and make a budget to ensure you are financially prepared.
5. Write a letter of explanation
While not required, IRCC recommends including a letter of explanation. In this letter, you should explain why you want to study in Canada and show that you understand your responsibilities as an international student in Canada.
Your school may have examples or templates available to guide you.
6. Check if you need additional documents
Depending on your country, program, and other factors, you may need to provide other documents, including:
- Medical exam
- Police certificate
- Proof of care (for minor children in Canada)
- Biometrics (fingerprints and photo)
- Language test results
Your local visa office may require additional documents. Answer the questions on IRCC’s how to apply page to receive a personalized checklist.
Some documents can take weeks (or longer) to obtain. Begin collecting them as early as possible.
Submit your study permit application
You must apply online, whether you’re outside Canada or already in Canada.
You can only apply on paper if you:
- have a disability that prevents you from applying online
- hold an identity or travel document for non-national residents, refugees or stateless persons
Visit IRCC’s how to apply page and answer a few questions about your situation. You’ll receive instructions and a personalized document checklist. Then, sign in to your IRCC account or create one to upload documents, pay fees, and submit your application.
